At what point, what moment, do those who are creative die inside?
Case in point: Celine Dion Preaches "Love" for Chrysler.
I mean, I don't have a lot respect, creatively or otherwise for Celine Dion. She doesn't write music or lyrics, she only vocalizes the words someone else hands her. She
But I do think at one point, she was an artist. She may have sung other people's lyrics, but at one point, I'm sure, she felt strong about the words, and the words touched her deeply enough to pour out the emotion to make her fans feel deeply about the words.
A long time ago, she lost a lot of that. She'd be handed lyrics built for specific movies, and was told 'okay, give us that Celine Magic, Baybee!!" and she cranked them out. Maybe, just maybe she convinced herself, hey, these lyrics are powerful too, and I can truly believe in them, and she gave what could maybe, barely still be considered art in music.
Now she's singing songs about falling in love with a Chrysler.
Is it just all about the money? It just makes me ill.
Money is great, don't get me wrong. But you know what? Dion is in a "powerful" enough position that if she still had creative juices, heart and soul, she could echew deals like pimping for Chrysler and say "now I'm putting out only the music I truly believe in". If she never sold another record, chances are she'd have respect: self respect and the respect of other artists.
Nope. She's singing songs about falling in love with a Town and Country minivan.
And people wonder why I like the Tragically Hip so much ;) (hint: the music's great - the verve of massive artistry and faith to one's roots is even greater).
